La Bombonera tour and museum: what to see and where to stay

La Bombonera (The Chocolate Box) is one of the most famous football grounds in the world and an almost essential stop for anyone travelling to Buenos Aires for the football. Seeing a Boca Juniors match as a tourist is not easy: the club sells tickets almost exclusively to its members. That is why many visitors get to know the stadium through the Museo de la Pasión Boquense and its visits.

The stadium's official name is Alberto José Armando, and it opened in 1940. The museum, housed in the same building, opened in 2001. You go round it without a guide, and it gathers the club's history: its idols, its trophies and a 360-degree cinema.

Prices change often, so it is worth checking them on the museum's official website before you go.

Opening hours

The museum is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm. Before setting off, check the museum's website, especially if Boca are playing that day.

Getting to La Boca

La Bombonera is at Brandsen 805, in La Boca. From Recoleta or Palermo you can get there by taxi, ride-hailing app or bus. Caminito is a few blocks away, and many visitors combine the two in one outing.

If you also want to see the city's other great ground, River Plate's Monumental (Monumental Stadium) has its own tour and museum. It is associated with Núñez, although the land actually belongs to the neighbouring barrio of Belgrano. We cover it in The most famous stadiums in Buenos Aires.

Where to stay

Four neighbourhoods are popular bases: Palermo, with plenty of bars and restaurants; San Telmo, the historic quarter, close to La Boca; the Centro, by the Obelisco and Avenida Corrientes; and Recoleta, residential and elegant, with the Recoleta Cemetery and line D of the Subte (underground).

Some hotels in Recoleta (each name leads to the accommodation map at the end of the article):
